Event Description

This workshop, led by Sarah Irwin, is designed to empower jobseekers with the tools and strategies to use LinkedIn effectively in their career search. It introduces LinkedIn as a dynamic platform for building a professional identity, expanding networks, and accessing job opportunities.

?? Key Topics Covered

  • What is LinkedIn? LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional networking platform, used by over 1 billion people and 95% of recruiters. It functions as an interactive online CV and a space to build your personal brand
  • Why LinkedIn Matters for Jobseekers The platform is a recruiter’s go-to tool. It offers visibility, credibility, and insight into candidates’ values and interests. First impressions—formed in seconds—are shaped by your profile photo, headline, and summary
  • Job Search Strategies The workshop emphasises:
    • Using keywords and job alerts
    • Engaging with content to stay visible
    • Networking over direct applications
    • Posting authentically to build credibility
    • Researching companies and interviewers before applying
  • Tips and Tricks
  • Participants are encouraged to build or tailor their profiles during the session, reflect on their career goals, and engage in activities that reinforce learning—like crafting a summary, identifying key skills, and creating impactful posts

You will hear about  the various roles, both technical and non-technical, commonly found within tech companies, and examine statistics on the diversity of educational backgrounds in the tech sector.

Additionally, colleagues from Version 1 will share their personal career journeys, providing a range of real-life stories from individuals who have entered tech through non-traditional routes. We will explore the different avenues available for upskilling, including bootcamps and academies in the UK. Participants will also have the opportunity to conduct their own research on local options and compare notes. The workshop will conclude with a discussion on the importance of transferable skills and soft skills.
